Nicholas
A Saint for Christmas
Many of us remember
learning that Santa Claus, the beloved figure of Christmas giving,
was brought to the New World by the Dutch. Each year on the night
before December 6, the feast of Saint Nicholas, Dutch children
would set their shoes out in the hopes that they would be filled
with candy and other treats in the morning.
Why would they
do that? How did Saint Nicholas come to be connected with generosity
and secret giving? As a young man, Nicholas inherited much money
when his parents died. Moved by the love of Jesus, Nicholas decided
to give his inheritance to the poor.
One of the stories
of Nicholas' generosity tells of a poor man with three daughters
for whom he had no dowry and so could not find them suitable husbands.
When Nicholas heard that the man was considering selling his daughters
into slavery, he took action. Nicholas secretly tossed a bag of
gold through the window (or by another story, down the chimney)
so the man's daughters were saved.
Nicholas is a reminder to us that as we open our hearts to the
love of Jesus came to give us, we will begin to love others as
he has loved us. ---------
